^{During 1971, Go Nagai wrote the original Demon Lord Dante manga, which was published in}^Kodansha^'s^{Bokura Magazine}^{. After its original run in 1971 from January to June, Go Nagai went on to author the}^Devilman^{anime and manga, which was greatly inspired by Demon Lord Dante. However, the series received a}^remake^{in 1994 by illustrator}^{Akira Fuuga}^{called Shin Maō Dante (lit. The True Devil Lord Dante}^).

In 2002, the comic series was officially revived for another remake by Go Nagai, and during the same year a 13 episode anime adaption was created and broadcast worldwide by ^Animax^.

Based on Manga great Go Nagai's comic serial, the show is about a hero with supernatural powers. Its premise is considered a precursor to his "Devilman" series. The similarities of Mao Dante to Devilman are quite abundant. In this story Ryo Utsugi is drawn to a fissure in a Himalayan glacier to break God's seal and set free Mao Dante, a devil who has been frozen in ice for 2000 years. The first thing Dante does upon gaining his freedom is eat Ryo. Mao Dante's mind contains the memories of all of the human beings that he has consumed. But this time something is different, Dante's mind has been taken over by Ryo. The face between Dante's eyes is now Ryo's. Later, Ryo learns to control the demon to morph into a much more Devilman like being. Soon, we find out that Dante was once Judas, the disciple that betrayed Jesus. Dante's friend Zannin traveled to the Himalayas to fight God. God decided to punish Zannin when confronted, only Dante stepped in to help and was trapped in the "Ice Hell" intended for Zannin.
