The Devilman manga was first produced in 1972. It lasted over 5 volumes and 1352 pages. This extremely violent manga with a story stood out and was an instantaneous hit. The manga was so popular that it became its own anime series in that same year. The television series aired from July 1972 to March 1973.

The anime series was 39 episodes long and ran from July 8, 1972 to March 31, 1973 on NET (now TV Asahi), although in reality the series ended in April 7, 1973 in local stations. The series sported some differences from the manga (the character of Ryo Asuka wasn't created until Go started working on the manga after he finished working on the anime).
